Film & TV

Because of John’s intimate knowledge of all things to do with deer, John is frequently contacted by the media for comment. Since an early appearance on BBC Tomorrow’s World in 1972 John and Nichola Fletcher have taken part with their deer in over one hundred television and radio programmes as well as many print media. They are frequently called upon for comment on issues in areas as diverse as the politics of alternative land use, deer disease and biology, the history of humans and deer, the culling of deer and of course venison production, preparation and cooking. Most recently on 11th September 2021 John was the principal rambler with Clare Balding in BBC Radio Four's Ramblings programme which you can find and listen again to on the BBC Radio Four's Rambling site.

John recently appeared on BBC "Ramblings" Radio:

BBC Radio Scotland’s Out of Doors with Mark Stephen

This is a podcast some of which was broadcast on BBC Radio Scotland’s Out of Doors with Mark Stephen in October 2023. It is a lengthy relaxed conversation discussing my concerns about the environment and covers the history of our deer farm and how we came to set it up, our white deer, our plans for the future of the farm at a time when the environment is being destroyed, and some discussion on the subject of kidney donation.

BBC Radio Four’s Farming Today

This interview was with Nichola and John by Ruth Sanderson and was broadcast on the 29th December 2023 as a Farming Today programme covering the farm and its future and especially the future for venison and deer farming.

Radio Four news programme, ‘Today’ - kidney donation

On 2nd January 2024 listening to the Radio Four news programme, ‘Today’ I was astonished to hear my name, and then my voice, discussing kidney donation and then to hear how our Ramblings with Clare Balding had prompted someone, Lisa, to donate one of her kidneys to a stranger after listening to our broadcast. Pure joy!

And then on 3rd January, the next day, to hear Clare Balding on the same subject and to hear her reveal that a second person had been inspired by our Rambling to give one of  their kidneys too! What a start to 2024!
